British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
