The English and Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
