Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
